Google’s Electricity Use Surges 37% in 2025 as AI Data Centers Expand

Google reported a 37% increase in electricity consumption in 2025, the largest annual jump in company history, driven by AI data center buildout, cloud services, and YouTube streaming. Total electricity usage has risen more than 250% since 2019.

Despite the surge, Google says it kept operational carbon emissions in check by purchasing large amounts of clean energy. The company acknowledged that the pace of AI infrastructure expansion currently exceeds grid decarbonization, but it remains committed to scaling clean power and advancing emissions-reducing technologies.
