According to Stanford and USC’s Starling Lab, it took humanity 149 years after the camera’s invention to create 1.5 billion images, while generative AI matched that in just 18 months. Google recently said its tools have produced more than 100 billion AI images and videos in a few years, and it is expanding partnerships to adopt SynthID, its AI-content watermarking technology. While SynthID is designed to be tough to break, adding watermarks alone does not address the broader challenge of AI-driven disinformation.
