Google won an auction last Friday to acquire a large dataset from Spirit Airlines, consisting of the airline's employment and workplace records rather than customer or personal information. To prevent identification of individuals, Google will use a court-appointed ombudsman to oversee removal of personally identifying information before the data is transferred.
Google has agreed to keep the data de-identified and never intentionally re-identify it, with any third-party buyers bound by the same restrictions. The deal has reportedly caused concern among flight attendants.
