Google recently won an auction to acquire a large dataset from Spirit Airlines containing employment and workplace records. The data excludes personal and customer information, and Google has agreed to a court-appointed ombudsman overseeing the removal of personally identifying information before transfer. Under the agreement, Google must keep the data de-identified, avoid any deliberate re-identification, and impose the same restrictions on third parties if access is sold.
