YouTube requires creators to disclose when AI meaningfully alters or generates photorealistic content, but its policy leaves many forms of AI use unlabeled. Hank Green has highlighted a problem with AI content that these disclosure labels cannot catch, pointing to a gap between realistic and non-realistic exemptions.
The rules draw strange boundaries, applying to AI-generated music but not to clearly fantastical scenes, and they allow creators to use AI for idea generation, production assistance, voice cloning, and animated elements in fully animated videos. As a result, some realistic AI content can bypass the labeling requirement entirely.
