Protests are spreading across the U.S. Southwest as residents oppose data center expansion, citing water consumption, energy use, and pollution. Data centers use water for evaporative cooling, and their processors can reach internal temperatures as high as 176°F.
However, the true scale of water use is hard to pin down: online claims range from 500 ml per chatbot query to no issue at all, and tech companies' own data is often incomplete or inconsistent.
