Hyundai Workers Strike Over Plans to Deploy Humanoid Robots

Thousands of unionized Hyundai workers began striking at the company’s Ulsan plant after negotiations over deploying humanoid robots failed. The partial strike, the first factory stoppage over such robots in the auto industry, saw workers end shifts early in mid-July and plan further four-hour strikes later in the month. Union opposition intensified after Hyundai unveiled the Atlas humanoid robot, a 6-foot-tall, 100-pound-lifting machine made by Boston Dynamics, which Hyundai is set to fully acquire.
