IBM Introduces Sub-1 Nanometer Chip Technology, Claiming Major Leap for AI Computing

IBM has unveiled a new chip architecture that integrates nearly 100 billion transistors on a fingernail-sized chip, roughly doubling the transistor density of its previous generation. The company claims this delivers significant improvements in compute performance and energy efficiency for AI data centers, calling it the world's first sub-1 nanometer chip technology.

However, the achievement does not involve physically shrinking features below 1 nanometer; instead, IBM's nanostack architecture mimics the performance gains of such theoretical chips. Jay Gambetta, director of IBM Research, described the innovation as a meaningful leap forward that promises more powerful computing without a corresponding increase in energy use.
