IBM has announced a new chip architecture that integrates nearly 100 billion transistors on a chip the size of a human fingernail, roughly doubling the transistor density of its previous generation. Dubbed the “world’s first sub-1 nanometer chip technology” for AI data centers, the design aims to deliver significant gains in compute performance and energy efficiency.
Jay Gambetta, director of IBM Research, described it as a meaningful leap forward, enabling more powerful computing without a proportional increase in energy. The “sub-1 nanometer” label refers to the performance improvements equivalent to such feature sizes, not to physically smaller transistors.
