IBM Unveils Nanostack Architecture That Doubles Transistor Density for AI Computing

IBM has announced a new chip architecture, called Nanostack, that integrates nearly 100 billion transistors on a chip the size of a fingernail—roughly twice the density of its previous generation. The company claims this is the “world’s first sub-1 nanometer chip technology” for AI data centers, though it does not physically shrink features below 1 nanometer.

Instead, the architecture delivers the performance and energy-efficiency gains expected from such theoretical miniaturization. IBM describes the innovation as a meaningful leap forward that could significantly boost computing power without a proportional increase in energy consumption.
