IBM Unveils Nanostack Chip Architecture with Nearly 100 Billion Transistors, Claiming Sub-1 Nanometer Performance Leap

IBM has introduced a new chip architecture that packs nearly 100 billion transistors onto a chip the size of a fingernail, roughly doubling the transistor density of its previous technology. The company describes it as the world’s first sub-1 nanometer chip technology for AI data centers, though the term refers to performance equivalence rather than physically sub-1nm features. Jay Gambetta, director of IBM Research, called it a meaningful leap forward that could deliver significantly more powerful computing without a corresponding increase in energy consumption.
