Most AI biology work has focused on designing proteins, but large genome models have now been used to produce complete viral genomes. The resulting viruses infect bacteria and are closely related to an existing virus, though they carry distinct features that would be difficult to evolve naturally.
Researchers at Stanford University conducted the work and caution that a similar AI could potentially be developed to design viruses that target vertebrates. They suggest it may be time to start preparing for that possibility.
