Apple unveils MacBook Pro with touchscreen PROLED XDR, M5 Pro and M5 Max

Apple’s October 28, 2026 announcement introduces a separate MacBook Pro lineup with PROLED XDR. Its headline changes are tandem OLED, touchscreen input and Dynamic Island. The 14- and 16-inch laptops use M5 Pro or M5 Max chips. These are different machines from the 14-inch base-M6 MacBook Pro with Liquid Retina XDR announced on October 27.

What changes on screen

The displays measure 14.2 and 16.3 inches diagonally. They combine two OLED pixel layers with adaptive ProMotion refresh rates from 10Hz to 120Hz and support for P3 and Adobe RGB. Adobe RGB matters particularly for photography and print workflows; maximum brightness alone does not describe the display’s capabilities.

Apple specifies up to 2000 nits peak HDR brightness and peak SDR brightness outdoors, versus up to 1000 nits sustained full-screen brightness. The peak figure should not be read as continuous brightness across the entire panel. A nano-texture finish to reduce glare is optional.

Touch joins the keyboard

Touch supports scrolling, zooming and dragging onscreen, alongside the keyboard and trackpad. macOS translates touches into clicks, allowing some existing apps to work without a dedicated update.

However, Apple says the listed third-party apps offering additional Touch experiences will arrive later this year. The announcement does not mean every redesigned interface is ready today.

Dynamic Island brings quick access to ongoing activities, including music controls. Siri AI features and integrations depend on software version, language and region.

Configurations and connections

128GB of unified memory requires M5 Max with a 40-core GPU; a 16TB SSD also requires M5 Max. These are configuration ceilings, not the specification of the cheapest model. Chip numbers alone also offer a poor comparison: base M6 and M5 Pro/Max occupy different tiers. Direct performance comparisons require testing specific configurations.

Connections include three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, SDXC, MagSafe and a headphone jack. Wireless support comprises Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, with a 12MP Center Stage camera for calls.

Apple’s video-streaming tests rate the 14-inch M5 Pro at up to 22 hours and the 16-inch at 24 hours; M5 Max models reach 20 and 22 hours respectively. Those figures do not promise equivalent runtime while rendering.

Prices and release dates

US starting prices are $2,899 for the 14-inch M5 Pro and $3,399 for the 16-inch M5 Pro. M5 Max versions start at $4,499 and $4,799 respectively. Those are entry configurations, not machines fitted with maximum memory and storage.

Pre-orders open October 28 in 30 countries and regions, including the US. Deliveries and retail availability begin November 6. The release does not establish Ukrainian pricing or a separate Ukrainian launch date.

Official Apple video

Apple’s official introduction to the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR and Touch runs 1 minute 57 seconds. It demonstrates the display and touch interaction, but does not replace independent testing.
