Meta pivots again to open-weight AI with new models and a broader vision

Meta is doubling down on open-weight large language models, announcing the release of Muse Glimmer and pledging to open the weights of its more powerful Muse Spark 1.2 model within weeks. CEO Mark Zuckerberg accompanied the news with a lengthy essay outlining Meta’s AI philosophy and governance stance, positioning the company against proprietary rivals OpenAI and Anthropic. He also pushed back against industry lobbying aimed at curbing distillation and open-weight models, particularly those from Chinese labs, in favor of a more open ecosystem.
