Meta reboots AI strategy with new open-weight models and a Zuckerberg manifesto

Meta announced a renewed focus on open-weight large language models, releasing a new open model called Muse Glimmer and pledging to open the weights of its more powerful Muse Spark 1.2 within weeks. CEO Mark Zuckerberg published a lengthy essay outlining the company's AI philosophy and governance approach, distinguishing Meta from proprietary rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic.

The essay also pushes back on those companies' lobbying against open-weight models and addresses competition from Chinese labs using distillation. The moves signal another attempt to revitalize Meta's struggling AI position.
