Meta sued for using AI to decide layoffs, allegedly targeting disabled and leave-taking employees

A lawsuit filed by 26 former Meta employees claims the company used internal artificial intelligence systems—including a tool called Metamate and monitoring of keystrokes, activity, and AI-token usage—to select 8,000 workers for layoffs. The plaintiffs allege that these AI-driven decisions disproportionately affected workers with disabilities and those who had taken protected medical or family leave.

The complaint also states that Meta rated employees based on their adoption of the company's AI tools, classifying them as 'AI Native,' 'AI First,' or 'AI Enabled.' The suit, filed in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, argues that the terminations were made without the considered judgment of human managers.
