Meta tries again: open-weight models and a Zuckerberg essay mark latest AI strategy reboot

Meta announced a renewed focus on open-weight large language models, releasing Muse Glimmer and pledging to open the weights of its more powerful Muse Spark 1.2 within weeks. CEO Mark Zuckerberg published a 6,000-word essay laying out Meta's AI governance philosophy, distinguishing it from proprietary-model companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic.

He criticized those rivals for lobbying the US government for help competing against large-scale distillation and open-weight models from Chinese labs. The moves mark another attempt to reboot Meta's struggling AI strategy.
