Metro Redux’s next-gen update is out: what changes on PS5, Xbox and PC

4A Games has released the next-gen update for Metro 2033 Redux and Metro Last Light Redux. The studio announced the launch on October 29, bringing technical improvements to both games for modern hardware. 4A Games announcement.

The practical questions now are which version to install, which mode to choose and what to check before returning to an unfinished playthrough. The Next-Gen Update label covers different changes depending on the platform.

Where the update is available

Steam, Epic Games Store and GOG received the update on October 22, 2026, followed by consoles on October 29. Shared improvements include 4K textures, more detailed environments, improved animation and better audio. PC also gains DLSS and spatial audio. Deep Silver announcement.

The current FAQ says the upgrade is free for most Redux owners, with some edition exceptions. Windows Store followed on October 29; Japan is listed for November, with availability being finalised. Switch is excluded. There is no ray tracing, and this update is neither a remake nor another remaster. PLAION FAQ.

Before buying the games again, check your library and the upgrade offer associated with your edition. The Redux name matters here: it would be a mistake to assume that the same offer covers every older copy of Metro.

What changes on consoles

PS5 and PS5 Pro offer advertised 4K/60 FPS or upscaled 4K/120 FPS modes, with PSSR on PS5 Pro. The Xbox notes specifically list 120 FPS for Series X. Compatible display hardware is required. Full patch notes.

Xbox Wire additionally confirms Xbox Play Anywhere, optimisation for Ally and Ally X, and Impulse Trigger feedback. Xbox Wire.

Metro 2033 Redux’s PlayStation Store listing now includes a PS5 version, DualSense trigger effects and power-saving support. Ukrainian voice and text are also listed. PlayStation Store.

When comparing modes, judge image clarity and motion on your own screen rather than choosing solely by the largest number in the menu. Returning to the same scene is useful for that comparison: different content in the frame can distract from the difference you are actually trying to assess.

What PC players should check

PLAION lists 4 GB RAM, a GTX 750 Ti or Radeon R7 260X, and 20 GB of storage among Metro 2033 Redux’s minimum requirements. Recommended hardware includes 8 GB RAM and a GTX 1660 or RX 590. System requirements.

A separate October 23 hotfix addressed high-resolution detection, a disappearing Steam overlay, Epic Games Store achievements and incorrectly displayed Ukrainian localisation. Official Steam announcements.

Microsoft Store has an important exception: existing saves do not transfer. Chapter selection is unlocked instead, with default equipment available. Upgrade notes.

Check that the latest available build has downloaded before playing, and avoid hurriedly deleting older save files. That matters especially if you want to resume a particular section rather than restart the story. A list of fixes is not a substitute for independent testing, either: stability on a particular configuration still needs to be established separately.

Why Redux is being revisited now

The update precedes Metro 2039, currently scheduled for February 4, 2027. The publisher’s release also notes that development of the series continues in Ukraine and Malta. PLAION press release.

For someone with an existing library, the useful question is whether these familiar games now fit their current hardware better, without expecting a wholesale redesign. The upgrade’s practical value will depend on what mattered most to that player: modern settings, controller behaviour or fixes for problems that previously interrupted a playthrough.
