New York Imposes One-Year Ban on Large Data Center Construction, Shaking AI Industry

New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced a one-year moratorium on the construction of new data centers using 50 megawatts or more, making the state the first to enact such a ban. The pause will remain in effect until New York establishes consistent standards for responsible data center development.

The decision comes amid growing nationwide concerns over pollution, rising energy costs, and water shortages linked to data centers. At the federal level, Senators Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have proposed a similar nationwide moratorium, but the legislation faces opposition from Republicans who fear it could undermine U.S.

leadership in artificial intelligence.
