New York Imposes One-Year Moratorium on Large Data Center Construction

New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced a one-year moratorium on constructing data centers using 50 megawatts or more, making it the first US state to do so. The pause will remain until the state establishes consistent standards for responsible data center development.

The move comes amid growing concerns over pollution, rising energy costs, and water usage from data centers. At the federal level, Senators Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have proposed a nationwide ban, but it faces opposition from Republicans who argue it could hurt US AI leadership.
