The US Department of Defense has begun using generative AI tools to write reports mandated by Congress, a practice its chief technology officer, Emil Michael, highlighted as a major efficiency gain. Speaking at a Hudson Institute event on June 12, Michael explained that loading relevant papers into the AI allows it to draft a congressional report in about five hours, replacing what would otherwise require 200 hours of staffing time. The AI tools, starting with Google Cloud's Gemini for Government, have been available through the Pentagon's GenAI.mil platform to all six military branches since December 2025.
