Proposed AI Kill Switch Act Grants Government Power to Shut Down Dangerous AI Systems

A new legislative proposal called the AI Kill Switch Act would authorize U.S. government officials, including the Trump administration and future administrations, to order the shutdown of AI systems deemed capable of causing catastrophic harm.

Under the bill, AI developers must build in technical capabilities that allow the government to block user access, disable specific features, or fully terminate systems when directed. The measure amends the Homeland Security Act of 2002 and empowers the Secretary of Homeland Security to issue such orders, with fines of up to $20 million per day for non-compliance.
