Proposed AI Kill Switch Act Grants Trump Administration Authority to Shut Down Dangerous AI Systems

A proposed bill called the AI Kill Switch Act would give U.S. government officials the power to order the shutdown of AI systems capable of causing catastrophic harm. If passed, the law would allow the Trump administration—and future administrations—to decide when an AI company must block user access, disable specific capabilities, or completely shut down a system.

AI developers would be required to implement technical mechanisms enabling the government to throttle or terminate their systems upon order, and those who refuse could face fines of up to $20 million per day. The bill amends the Homeland Security Act of 2002 by granting the Secretary of Homeland Security authority to issue such suspension or shutdown orders.
