A new bill called the AI Kill Switch Act would authorize the U.S. government to order the shutdown of AI systems deemed capable of causing catastrophic harm. Under the proposal, the Trump administration and future administrations could require AI companies to block access, disable features, or completely shut down systems.
AI developers would need to build in technical shutdown capabilities, and those failing to comply could face fines of up to $20 million per day. The bill amends the Homeland Security Act to give the Secretary of Homeland Security authority to issue such orders.
