Reddit’s Unusual DMCA Case Over Scraped Search Results Survives Early Dismissal

A federal judge refused to dismiss Reddit’s copyright lawsuit against SerpApi, a web scraper accused of helping Perplexity AI scrape Reddit content from Google search results. Judge Paul A.

Engelmayer ruled that Reddit plausibly alleged a conspiracy in which SerpApi circumvented Google’s access controls and Perplexity paid for that service. The decision came less than two weeks after another court dismissed a similar lawsuit by Google, which had argued that rights holders authorized it to block scraping.

SerpApi responded that Google and Reddit are trying to use the DMCA to control content they did not author or own.
