Reddit’s Unusual DMCA Lawsuit Against Web Scraper Advances Despite Google’s Setback

A federal judge largely denied SerpApi’s motion to dismiss Reddit’s lawsuit, which accuses the scraping company of conspiring with Perplexity AI to illegally harvest copyrighted Reddit content from Google search results. Judge Paul A.

Engelmayer ruled that Reddit plausibly alleged a conspiracy, with SerpApi supplying a tool to bypass Google’s access controls and Perplexity paying for it. The ruling came less than two weeks after another court dismissed a similar lawsuit by Google, finding that Reddit had not authorized Google to block scraping.

SerpApi argues that both Google and Reddit are using the DMCA to claim control over content they neither authored nor own, while Google says it plans to amend its complaint.
