Sega’s Forgotten Tactical RPG Rival Was Ahead of the Fire Emblem Boom

At the August 4 Nintendo Direct, Nintendo spotlighted Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave for Switch 2, reviving interest in tactical RPGs. Fire Emblem gained global mainstream traction with 2019’s Three Houses, which blended turn-based combat with social sim elements.

Since then, games like Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope and Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles have followed in its footsteps. That momentum makes Sega—whose ’90s-era competitor was ahead of its time—a developer that should revisit the genre.
