South Korea plans to train every member of its nearly 500,000-strong military to operate drones as easily as personal firearms, with the goal of making drones a universal combat tool. Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back announced the initiative on June 26, citing lessons from conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.
The military will also equip units with cheap, expendable drones for surveillance and strikes, while deploying counter-drone lasers and microwave weapons. Additionally, the former drone operations command will be reorganized to focus on collaborating with industry to develop and procure commercial drone technology.
