South Korea intends to train every member of its nearly 500,000-strong military to operate drones as proficiently as they handle personal firearms, aiming to maintain a technological advantage over North Korea. Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back stated on June 26 that drones should become a "universal combat tool" and a "second personal weapon" for all soldiers.
The military will also equip units with inexpensive, expendable drones for surveillance and strike missions, deploy counter-drone lasers and microwave weapons, and reorganize its drone command to focus on commercial technology collaboration. The reforms are inspired by the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.
