South Korea's government and leading tech companies are investing $1 trillion in megaprojects to expand memory chip production, build AI data centers, and accelerate the commercial deployment of humanoid robots by 2028. The initiative follows record profits at Samsung and SK Hynix driven by AI demand, which has strained memory chip supply and raised consumer electronics prices.
Hyundai Motor is also racing to mass-produce humanoid robots from its subsidiary Boston Dynamics for use in automotive factories and other workplaces. President Lee Jae Myung stated that semiconductors, physical AI, and AI data centers are the three pillars for a national leap forward.
