South Korea plans to train every member of its nearly 500,000-strong military to operate drones as easily as they handle personal firearms. Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back announced the goal on June 26, stating drones should become a "universal combat tool" and a "second personal weapon" for all troops.
The initiative includes equipping units with cheap, expendable drones for surveillance and strike missions, as well as deploying counter-drone lasers and microwaves. The former drone operations command will be reorganized to focus on commercial technology collaboration, inspired by the use of drones in conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.
