Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX), Elon Musk's aerospace company, began trading publicly on the NASDAQ exchange in New York City Friday. The company’s stock opened at $135 per share, valued at nearly $1.8 trillion.
SpaceX shares rose to $160.95 by the end of the day, resulting in a 19% increase. This valuation makes Elon Musk the world's first trillionaire based on his stake in the company.
Thousands of current and former SpaceX employees became overnight millionaires as their stock options plans yielded significant wealth. The listing has many speculating about SpaceX’s future trajectory, particularly with regards to its advanced AI potential.
