Humanoid robots, teleoperated by skilled surgeons, have successfully removed gallbladders from live pigs in a world-first preclinical trial published in the journal Nature. Unlike fully autonomous machines, the robots were controlled remotely by human doctors, demonstrating a new form of human-robot collaboration.
The system requires less space and costs significantly less than specialized surgical robots, making it potentially deployable in rural hospitals, battlefield settings, or even space missions. According to Dr.
Shanglei Liu, a surgeon at UC San Diego, this approach could bring robotic-assisted surgery to facilities that lack the resources for existing expensive equipment.
