In a world-first medical experiment, humanoid robots remotely controlled by human surgeons removed the gallbladders from live pigs during minimally invasive surgeries. The teleoperated robots, rather than acting autonomously, demonstrated a new human-robot collaboration that could expand access to robotic-assisted surgery.
According to Dr. Shanglei Liu of UC San Diego, the system is cheaper and takes up less space than specialized surgical robots, making it deployable in rural areas, battlefields, or even space.
