Taiwan's government has proposed a $6.6 billion special budget to acquire over 208,000 domestically made coastal attack drones and other unmanned systems from 2026 to 2031, aiming to strengthen its military deterrent against potential Chinese invasion. This would dramatically expand Taiwan's current arsenal of just 5,000 US-made and local attack drones.
Taiwanese firms are also forming international partnerships to sell more drones to the US military, while citizens train as drone pilots. Recent military exercises showcased both American-made Altius-600 loitering munitions and Taiwanese drones striking maritime targets.
