Taiwan Ramps Up Domestic Drone Production for Defense and US Military Sales

Taiwan's government has proposed a $6.6 billion special budget to buy over 208,000 coastal attack drones, 1,400 reconnaissance drones, and 1,320 unmanned surface vessels made in Taiwan between 2026 and 2031. Currently, Taiwan's arsenal includes only about 5,000 US-made and domestically produced drones.

Recent military exercises featured both US-made Altius-600 loitering munition drones and Taiwan-made drones striking maritime targets. Meanwhile, Taiwanese companies are forming international partnerships to sell more drones to the US military and other overseas buyers.
