Taiwan Ramps Up Drone Production for Self-Defense and US Military Exports Amid China Threat

Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense has proposed a $6.6 billion special budget to purchase over 208,000 domestically made coastal attack drones, 1,400 coastal reconnaissance drones, and 1,320 uncrewed surface vessels between 2026 and 2031. This would significantly expand Taiwan's current arsenal of just 5,000 US-made and domestic attack drones.

Taiwanese forces have already deployed US-made Altius-600 loitering munition drones and domestically produced drones in recent military exercises. Meanwhile, Taiwanese companies are forming international partnerships to sell more drones to the US military and other overseas buyers.
