Trump's AI-Driven Overhaul of Government Websites Yields Disastrous Results

President Donald Trump's initiative to rapidly redesign all 27,000 .gov websites using artificial intelligence has encountered significant difficulties. The National Design Studio, created by executive order in August 2025, was tasked with updating the US Web Design System within three years.

However, the effort was hampered by DOGE's deep cuts to agencies previously responsible for government web improvements, including the dismantling of the 18F technology unit and the restructuring of the US Digital Service. The ambitious plan, intended to create a more usable and beautiful government design language, instead produced poor outcomes due to these constraints.
