President Donald Trump’s plan to use AI to rapidly redesign every government website is not going well. In August 2025, he created the National Design Studio (NDS) by executive order, tasking it with overhauling 27,000 dot-gov sites in three years.
The effort has been hampered by DOGE’s deep cuts to agencies like the 18F technology unit and the restructuring of the US Digital Service, leaving a small team to handle a monumental job. The resulting AI-designed sites have been widely criticized as failures, undermining Trump’s goal of a more usable and beautiful government design language.
