US AI System Lets Ukraine’s Low-Cost Kamikaze Drones Track Targets Autonomously

Ukrainian forces have used $400 Shrike drones with explosive payloads to destroy Russian armored vehicles and helicopters. Now those drones are being upgraded with AI autonomy from US company Auterion, allowing them to autonomously track and home in on moving targets.

Operators can fly the drone in, designate a target up to half a mile away, and switch it to fire-and-forget terminal guidance mode. SkyFall and Auterion plan to deliver 50,000 such AI-equipped Shrike drones to Ukraine’s front lines in the coming months.

US Ban on Foreign-Made Robots: Winners and Losers

The US Federal Communications Commission has added foreign-made advanced robotic devices to its Covered List, effectively banning robots manufactured abroad, including Chinese humanoid and four-legged robots as well as robot vacuums. The FCC cited previously discovered cybersecurity vulnerabilities in Chinese-made robots as justification for the ban. The agency did not act alone: it is required by law to follow a qualifying national security authority, and the White House convened an interagency body including national security agencies that determined the robots pose an unacceptable risk. Flaw Found by Anthropic's Mythos Sidelines HAWK, a Quantum-Resistant Algorithm Candidate
