US Army Exhausts Year’s Supply of AI Tokens Just Weeks After Promising Unlimited Access

Despite the Department of Defense’s recent boast that nearly half of its 3.5 million employees were using AI, the Army’s Combat Capabilities Development Command received an email warning that token usage had outpaced supply. The Army CIO had announced unlimited tokens in May 2026, but by mid-June the pool was exhausted and usage limits were reinstated.

Tokens were temporarily renewed at current levels, but continued funding remains uncertain after October 1. An anonymous Army employee noted that the entire service burned through a year’s worth of tokens in just one month.
