Just over a month after the Department of Defense announced that nearly half of its 3.5 million employees were using AI, the Army's Combat Capabilities Development Command told staff they were exhausting their AI token supply and needed to reduce usage. An internal email revealed that the Army CIO had declared unlimited tokens in May 2026, but the pool was drained by mid-June, prompting reimposed limits.
While the Army renewed token access at current levels, it remains uncertain whether funding will continue past October 1. The service relies on the Ask Sage platform, which runs models like Gemini, Llama, and ChatGPT, and one employee noted the entire Army used a full year's allocation in just one month.
