US-built AI lets Ukraine's low-cost Shrike drones track targets autonomously

Ukrainian forces have been using $400 Shrike drones with explosive warheads to destroy Russian armored vehicles and helicopters. Now, thousands of these drones are being fitted with an AI autonomy system from US company Auterion, enabling them to track and home in on moving targets without operator guidance.

The Ukrainian military began receiving the upgraded drones in mid-July, with plans to deliver 50,000 equipped with Auterion’s Skynode S strike kits. Operators can manually fly the drones into an area, designate a target up to half a mile away, then switch to autonomous fire-and-forget mode.
