Verizon has disclosed a $1 billion agreement to connect Google data centers using its dark fiber network, marking the launch of its new AI Connect initiative. The telecom company is also repurposing copper-wired central offices into small data centers designed for AI inference workloads.
CEO Dan Schulman stated that additional AI-related deals worth multiple billions of dollars in revenue are expected by year-end. He emphasized the surging demand for data center connectivity and ultra-low-latency edge computing for applications such as robotics, remote surgery, and autonomous driving.
