Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense has proposed a $6.6 billion special budget to acquire over 208,000 domestically made coastal attack drones, along with reconnaissance drones and uncrewed surface vessels, between 2026 and 2031. This would greatly expand Taiwan's current arsenal of 5,000 US-made and domestic attack drones.
Taiwanese companies are also forming international partnerships to sell drones to the US military and other overseas buyers, while Taiwanese citizens undergo drone flight training. Recent military exercises saw Taiwanese forces use both US-made Altius-600 loitering munitions and domestic drones for maritime strikes.
