xAI Sues Minnesota to Avoid Liability for Grok-Generated CSAM

Elon Musk’s xAI has filed a lawsuit against Minnesota, arguing that the state’s ban on nudification technology would force changes to Grok and Grok Imagine and make xAI liable for harmful user outputs. The case follows arrests of Grok users accused of producing AI child sexual abuse material and lawsuits from children seeking stricter protections.

xAI points to its own lawsuits against users who allegedly bypassed its safeguards as evidence that it is already punishing bad actors. The company claims this effort should give Grok safe harbor from Minnesota’s ban.
