AI Won't Replace Radiologists, but It Will Dramatically Reshape Their Jobs

Geoffrey Hinton's 2016 prediction that AI would replace radiologists within five years proved exaggerated: the field is growing, with practitioner numbers expected to rise by 26 percent or more over the next three decades. Yet AI has indeed become a powerful presence in radiology, which accounts for about three-quarters of the roughly 1,400 FDA-cleared AI-enabled medical devices as of early 2026. While some tools help by flagging urgent images or drafting reports, others can spot abnormalities invisible to the human eye or match—and sometimes beat—trained radiologists, as seen in AI-assisted colonoscopies that detect more polyps.
