Anthropic’s new hardware standard lets AI agents operate physical devices

Anthropic has introduced the Model Hardware Standard (MHS), a set of standardized drivers that let AI agents interface with and control physical devices. Initially a research preview, MHS aims to help scientists connect lab equipment through a common interface, removing the need for custom translator programs.

Anthropic says this could reduce experimental setup time from weeks or months to hours or minutes. The idea grew out of a neuroscientist’s work coordinating complex research instruments at HHMI Janelia Research Campus.
