On October 21, 2026, EA announced the closure of BioWare and its Edmonton workspace. The company is also ending early development of the next Mass Effect. The decision appears in its official Building EA’s Next Chapter statement.

In the same statement, EA links the changes to concentrating resources and developing fewer large-scale action-adventure projects simultaneously.

How the studio’s plans changed

On January 29, 2025, BioWare said a core team was developing a new Mass Effect after Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Studio head Gary McKay explained that this stage did not require the entire studio and that colleagues had been matched with roles elsewhere at EA.

On November 7, 2025, its N7 Day message reaffirmed development and EA and BioWare’s commitment to more stories in this universe. The team described itself as focused exclusively on Mass Effect. That provides historical context, rather than current confirmation that the project is continuing.

Why this matters for RPGs

BioWare’s history began in 1995. Its official portfolio includes Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire, Mass Effect and Dragon Age. The studio’s own description emphasizes stories, characters and worlds to explore.

For the audience of these games, a developer’s name means more than a logo on a cover. Expectations for a role-playing adventure involve how its authors build conversations, relationships and the consequences of decisions.

Discussion of a closure therefore extends beyond the next release to continuity of creative approach. That is our editorial assessment of its significance, not a prediction of specific changes to games already released.

Where the conclusions should stop

Ending a particular development effort and permanently abandoning an entire intellectual property are different decisions. One should not automatically become the other in a headline. Nor does a franchise name establish who might work on it in future: without a separate announcement, suggestions of a handover to another studio remain speculation.

Explanations of the reasons deserve equal care. The performance of an individual game, internal decisions and the personal responsibility of executives require their own evidence. Combining them into a simple story about one culprit on the strength of a dramatic headline would be misleading. We do not use unconfirmed redundancy figures or assign motives to the company here.

What readers should check next

Earlier announcements help reconstruct the timeline, but cannot disprove a subsequent decision. When reading reposted material, compare the date of the statement rather than only the publication time of the article. This is particularly important with N7 Day coverage: an optimistic message from last autumn can easily be mistaken for a response to the current situation.

Questions about purchased games, online features and any eventual return of the series should be checked separately for the relevant products. A developer’s closure is not, by itself, an instruction to delete games, change accounts or rush to buy remaining editions. The practical distinction is between the future of a team and the specific terms under which each existing game can be used.
