Google announced in-chat file editing and previews on October 29, 2026. PDFs work on web and mobile; the other listed formats are web-only. Users can make manual changes or request AI revisions. Google says availability covers all users and languages supported by the app. Google announcement
From an answer to a working document
File generation arrived earlier: Google's April 29 announcement covered formats including PDF, DOCX, XLSX and Workspace files. Most formats can be downloaded or exported to Drive. Earlier update
In our view, the practical value of the latest step is a shorter route from a draft to a correction. Seeing material as a document makes it easier to assess its structure rather than individual sentences: is the conclusion missing, do sections repeat each other, and can the reader tell where the figures came from? Fewer trips between windows do not, by themselves, make the content more accurate.
Start with something easy to verify
A sensible first test is a small piece of material you know well: a meeting outline, a summary of your own notes or a table containing a few rows. Decide what you need before prompting. A document for reading, a spreadsheet for calculations and slides for a talk have different success criteria.
Separate substance from presentation in the request. For example: “Prepare a brief outline from these notes. Preserve every date and name, add no facts, and list unanswered questions separately.” Check the substance before changing the tone or length. This is an editorial suggestion, not a guarantee against errors.
Google's Canvas documentation describes direct text editing, requests targeting a selected passage and automatic saving of changes. Canvas help
Keep a separate copy of the original before a major rewrite. If only one paragraph needs changing, identify it precisely. “Make this better” leaves considerable room for a change of meaning; “remove repetition while preserving the figures and conclusion” provides a clearer brief.
Review the revised passage alongside its surroundings, because a locally tidy edit can still create a contradiction elsewhere.
Check the finished file, not just the preview
For prose, the main checkpoints are names, dates, quotations and references. For a spreadsheet, check formulas, units, rounding and totals as well as column labels. For slides, inspect readability and whether important qualifications survived the shortening process.
Open the exported PDF separately: a convenient chat preview is not a substitute for reviewing the file that the recipient will actually receive.
Avoid using real personal information for a trial when fictional examples will do. Before uploading workplace material, establish your organization's rules. Where a document carries legal, financial or other significant consequences, have the appropriate specialist review it rather than treating the confidence of the AI response as evidence of correctness.
This is not the same as Gemini inside Docs
Editing within Docs has separate access conditions: Google's help page specifies an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan. Gemini in Docs
Readers should therefore distinguish the Gemini app, Canvas and tools inside the office services themselves. Choosing a workflow means checking the required format and saving behavior on the device you use, rather than relying on a feature name alone. A more direct editing interface may reduce busywork; the author remains responsible for what the finished document says.
